I’m guessing you just touched down in the north of Thailand, and you’re now on the hunt for the best cafes in Chiang Mai? Great. I’m here to help you discover the latest and greatest coffee spots across the city.
In fact, as I write this, I’m sitting inside a gorgeous coffee shop, sipping on a perfectly balanced, iced latte with oat milk.
Whatever your favourite coffee is, rest assured the Thai locals are serious about coffee and have you covered.
As a huge coffee fan, I can safely say this city’s coffee scene is incredible. Since the rise of Digital Nomad culture over the last ten years, the city has become jam-packed with hundreds of places to visit.
Thankfully, I’ve visited a ton of them after spending a couple of months in Chiang Mai, and because I’m coffee mad, I decided to create this blog for fun to help your cafe hop around Chiang Mai with a plan.
Before we dive into the list, here is a bit about me.
I’m James, a total coffee nerd. I run an e-commerce coffee brand called ‘Balance Coffee’. Whilst travelling the world. As you can probably imagine, speciality coffee is a huge priority for me when I kick start my day.
Just so we’re on the same page, below is a short list of the deciding factors I look at scoring coffee shops, and in particular, the best cafes in Chiang Mai.
Table of Contents
The Deciding Factors
– Strong WIFI – because all humans need a good internet connection.
– Speciality Grade Coffee – because drinking low-grade, unethical coffee sucks
– Location – Time is money
– Vibe & Aesthetics – Getting into work mode requires the right ambience
– Atmosphere – This can make or break a coffee shop. Am I right?
– Alternative Milk – Because we’re in 2023
Now you know how I rate my cafe choice, let’s get started, shall we?
List of the Best Coffee Shops in Chiang Mai – Ordered by my Favourite
1. Roast8ry Lab – Trendiest Cafe Spot
Situated in the ultra-cool Nimman quarter of Chiang Mai, this hotspot is a prime spot. But why is this place so popular?
As matter of fact, this cafe attracts a great blend (pun intended) of locals, travellers, and nomads.
Picture coffee meet-ups, business chats, and people enjoying chillout time. Find a glimmer of sun beaming down your face as you enjoy a flat white or iced latte. Like it cooler? Take a break from the heat inside to ultra cool air con f keeping cool is your style.
Before we even get to the coffee, we need to talk about this cafe’s seating arrangement.
A multi-faceted design, as the inside is clean and minimal. Coupled with a rustic open-plan outside area set on a raised platform.
Also, it is perfect for kicking back to classic tunes on a Spotify playlist in the background – you’ll know you’re in the right place in town.
It feels like the place to be, so I’ve labelled this cafe as the ‘most trendy coffee shop in Chiang Mai’.

2. The Baristro – Asian Style: Best Coffee In Chiang Mai
This cafe is placed second, although it was one of the last I visited during my stay in Chiang Mai. Just when I thought the cafe scene over here couldn’t deliver any more unique spaces, this dropped on my radar.
What’s most astonishing about this place is the stone-themed architecture, providing a rustic feel splashed across the walls as well as the floor.
Yet mixed with mahogany furniture and brushed stainless steel service counter spanning the entire width of the cafe at around 10 metres. This creates a centre point from the service station of equipped baristas as the name suggests.
Additionally, the standout point about Baristro for me personally was the coffee. It was the most clarity in flavour I’d witnessed through milk which suggests they’ve taste-tested their drinks to understand that works.
I enjoyed the medium roast as a Piccolo with oat milk, and I was buzzed to experience pronounced notes of pink marshmallows, which left me wanting more. Yup – I went back for another one as I drank the other one like it was a dessert.
Certainly, I highly recommend visiting this venue even though it’s around a 15-minute ride from the central old town, but well worth it.

3. The Barn Eatery & Design
This cafe spot is the definition of the term ‘hidden gem’. Buried within a distinguished interior that brings the inside to life. The shape and layout of this space have much charm and character.
Understated from the outside, but as you step inside, you immediately feel like you’re in zen mode. Whether you’re looking to pop out the laptop to hit reply on a few emails or simply savour your morning coffee, you’re in for a treat.
They have plenty of seating options, from cosy armchairs to large tables, making it a great spot to work or relax.
Another thing that’s quite impressive at this spot is their coffee, with a range of speciality coffee drinks available. I opted for a flat white and was impressed by the smooth, creamy texture and rich flavour.
Furthermore, the baristas here are knowledgeable and passionate about coffee, which shows in their drinks’ quality.
I had quite a long day before stopping by here, so I was also looking forward to a meal. They offer a range of delicious food and pastries. I tried the avocado toast, and it was delicious, with perfectly ripe avocados as well as a generous sprinkle of herbs and spices.
Truly, I had such a fantastic experience here. The atmosphere, rustic theme, as well as coffee exceeded my expectations, and I recommend this cafe to anyone visiting Chiang Mai.
- Address: 14 Srivichai Soi 5, Tambon Su Thep, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50200, Thailand
Certainly, it’s easy to see why this cafe might be one of the most popular hangout cafes in Chiang Mai. Situated right on the corner of one of the main hangouts of the popular Nimman area.
It gets my vote for its trendy vibes. Digital nomads flock here for the excellent coffee, great wifi, plug sockets galore, as well as plenty of air-conditioners.
Owned by a coffee roastery, it’s easy to see that these guys know what they are doing when running one of the best cafes in Chiang Mai. So, it’s no surprise that the real star of the show is their coffee.
Also, did I mention the pastries are tasty as hell too? Whether you’re here to work, chat with friends, or simply relax and enjoy a cup of coffee, The Roastnyiom has something for everyone. This venue is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

5. Ombra Cafe
Chiang Mai is an unbelievable location, particularly if you’re a digital nomad like me. A city full to the brim with restaurants, cafes, health concepts, and much more.
I absolutely love Ombra Cafe. The ambience is just so relaxing, and I felt focused and calm during my time here.
But what sets Ombra Cafe apart is the quality of their coffee as well as their matcha lattes.
They’re just so good! And if you’re feeling peckish, they have some delicious bread and snacks you can grab a bite of. It’s a smooth spot to work, relax, and enjoy a great cup of coffee.
- Address: 1 Chang Phueak, Chiang Mai 50300, Thailand
6. Akha Ama Phrasingh
This cafe is an absolute masterpiece in the heart of Chiang Mai’s most popular street (Walking street).
I took this photo using my iPhone wide zoom so that you can see the full visual perspective. This cafe was built with style, and not a Thai baht was spared to bring this place to life.
The service is equally as polished as you enter.
Two small things to note from a personal point of view: First, I have a slight annoyance with cafes that use buzzers for order management; however, I’m sure they do what they need to.
Secondly, there is only one plug socket in this cafe, so don’t expect to get much work done unless you’ve arrived lithium prepared.
Some cafes are just meant to be savoured as they are, without a laptop to distract from the original charm and beauty. I honestly feel this is one of them, so I just embraced the limited charging points.
Lastly, the alternative milk situation was a little precarious. ‘Vegan Milk’ was presented to me after I requested oat milk with my coffee.
Not much context to what’s inside it, but hey – we’re in Thailand, after all.

7. W8 – Cafe
I’ll get straight to it. This is an absolutely epic brunch spot. Food is more expensive in Thailand, but you get what you pay for, right?
I love W8 cafe. It’s one of my favourite places to work in Chiang Mai. The atmosphere is lovely, with indoor as well as outdoor seating options available.
There’s plenty of seating, so you don’t have to worry about not finding a spot. The drinks are also very affordable, which is always a plus.
As a matter of fact, one of the best things about this cafe is that it has air conditioning on the second floor, which is a lifesaver in the hot and humid weather of Chiang Mai. And if you’re travelling by motorbike, there’s easy street parking available.
The cafe is also filled with many plants and natural light, giving it a refreshing and vibrant atmosphere. It’s spread out over three floors, with the second floor being my favourite.
Furthermore, it has a great view, and the vibe is so chill and relaxing, with lots of green plants scattered throughout.
As for the coffee, it’s really good, and they also have alternative milk options like oat milk available. They don’t have a kitchen, but you can order delivery food as well as eat it there, which is convenient.
Certainly, W8 cafe is one of the coolest cafes in Chiang Mai. The rooftop is also beautiful and worth checking out.
- Address: Chang Moi Rd, Tambon Si Phum, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Thailand
8. SS1254372 CAFE
The front of the cafe that faces the road is inconspicuous. I must have first driven past this coffee spot a handful of times. What strikes you as you first glimpse this cool hangout on a side street of Nimman is the beautiful shape and windows.
What to say about the food? It’s pretty damn good, to be honest. A classic Aussie-style brunch menu, but after eating Asian cuisine for the majority of our time, it’s nice to taste something familiar.
I opted for the smashed avo, with smoked salmon on the side, for that extra protein and omega 3 doses.
The coffee was tasty, but sadly, no oat milk was served here, which surprised me given the vibe. They did have soy and almond, however, if that suits your taste buds.
- Our Rating: 4.7 / 5

9. Gravity Cafe & Bistro
Located in the old town square, close to Akha Ama (Mentioned above), this cafe is nomad central. One of the main perks of this cafe is its ‘all-day’ operating hours.
It closes at midnight, meaning it’s perfectly set up for those needing to get online to sync with European business hours.
You’ll find a community feel and a pretty good standard of coffee and food.
My favourite seat in the house is the outside area, as it has comfy cushioned seats as well as a water feature providing a calming background noise softening the occasional scooter roar on the roadside view.
- Our Rating: 4.5 / 5
- Address: 22 Samlarn Rd, Chiang Mai 50200, Thailand
10. My Secret Cafe in Town
I loved my visit to My Secret Cafe In Town. It was easily one of the best cafes in Chiang Mai that I’ve visited.
Everything on the menu I tried was fantastic, from the coffee to the smoothies to the breakfast options.
I particularly recommend the curry noodles – delicious and a great comfort food option. They also had noodle salad, which was light, refreshing, and incredibly tasty. The toasties were also really good. There are plenty of vegetarian options available as well.
As a matter of fact, the staff at My Secret Cafe In Town are all lovely and full of smiles. The environment is clean and tidy, with a relaxed atmosphere, hipster decor, and many plants.
As a digital nomad, I’m always looking for a quiet space where I can work, and this cafe definitely fits the bill. The wifi is strong, and there are plenty of outlets for charging.
In terms of the coffee itself, I was really impressed. They use speciality grade beans and have a great selection of alternative milk. The iced latte I had was perfectly balanced and refreshing.
Certainly, it’s worth a visit if you’re in Chiang Mai and looking for a great cafe experience.
- Address: 175, 12 Rachadamnoen Rd, Tambon Si Phum, Mueang Chiang Mai District,
11. Rist8to Lab
I have to say, Rist8to is hands down one of the best coffee places in Chiang Mai. Located in the bustling Old City, this spot is a hidden gem that you won’t want to miss.
As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the friendly baristas eager to share their love of coffee with me. A latte art champion runs the place, and it shows in the quality of the drinks they serve.
From classic black coffee to creative white drinks and even coffee with a splash of alcohol, there is something for everyone at this cafe.
Furthermore, the prices are extremely fair. Most drinks are around 88 baht, and they are worth every penny. The coffee is perfectly prepared and consistent, which I appreciate as a professional barista.
So, whether you’re a coffee lover or just enjoy a casual cup now and then, Rist8to is a must-visit spot in Chiang Mai. Certainly, you won’t be disappointed.

12. Zohng Coffee – Chillout Cafe & Workspace
This is yet another coffee shop that won my heart. ZOHNG is an amazing coffee shop in the heart of Chiang Mai’s old city.
As soon as I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the cosy atmosphere. They had lots of seating options – both inside and outside and on the second floor.
The interior is warm and inviting, with books to read, tabletop games, and what seem to be oil paintings decorating the walls.
One of the things that stood out about ZOHNG was the variety of coffees they had on offer. As a coffee lover, I was in heaven!
I decided to go for an iced Americano with a dark roast and an extra shot of espresso, and it did not disappoint. The flavour was bold and intense, almost similar to the tingling sensation you get after a sip of red wine.
In addition to the coffee, the spot has a great burger shop attached, so you can grab a bite to eat while you enjoy your coffee. The atmosphere is relaxing and welcoming, and the coffee is top-notch. It’s a must-visit spot on any coffee lover’s list.
- Address: 58 Intrawarorot Road Soi 2, Tambon Si Phum, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Thailand
13. Fohhide – Cafe
You’ll need google maps to find this hidden gem, as it’s nestled in the most unassuming place. Situated two doors down from Roast8ery Lab we featured number one in this list.
You’ll take the elevator up to the 5th floor before stepping out into an outdoor seating area with seriously stunning views of the city and neighbouring mountains.
Step inside, and you’ll be surprised at what’s in front of you. A tiny square-foot cafe bar methodically designed to a T. The L-shaped bar provides an interactive coffee experience as you choose from a broad menu of coffees.
My friend and I opted for the Ethiopian natural single-origin iced filter coffee brewed ‘Japanese style’ (hot over ice).
We had an awesome conversation with an American guy named Drew, who’d been living in Chiang Mai for six years. Sharing stories and several insider recommendations made this experience one to remember.
- Our Rating: 4.7 / 5
- Address: 5 Nimmana Haeminda Rd Lane 5, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Thailand
14. Graph Ground
This cafe is unassuming from the outside. In fact, it appears to be a derelict building at a glance.
That’s until you spot the small, crafted, Graph sign out of the corner of your eye. As you walk to the front entrance, the dichotomy between the exterior and interior is instantly unravelled.
Situated opposite the popular Stay with Nimman ChiangMai hotel (this is where we were staying) since it provided unbelievable access to all the local hangouts – location tip!
So what is it about Graph cafe that truly stands out from the masses of coffee shops in Chiang Mai? Why should you take the time to visit this place?
The drink menu is insane! From a self-proclaimed coffee snob, I was wowed by their creativity with the menu. Introducing nitro cold brew drinks infused with orange zest. Imagine a creamy Irish Guinness with citric notes. Yum.
I enjoyed a drink named the ‘Monochrome’, as seen in the image below. Espresso, Activated Charcoal, Vanilla, and Oat milk. Wonderful if you’re nursing a dodgy belly too.

15. Yesterday’s Cafe
If you’re in the mood for a cosy and relaxing cafe experience in Chiang Mai, you need to check this spot out. They are located in the heart of the Nimman neighbourhood. The cafe has chic vintage decor with black tones.
I loved the idea of the natural light that flooded the space, and the wooden furniture added to the warm, welcoming vibe. Plus, the wifi was strong, and plenty of outlets to charge my devices, making it a great spot for working or just relaxing with a good book.
But let’s talk about the coffee – it was amazing! I ordered an Americano and was blown away by the quality and flavour. And the pastries and baked goods looked delicious too.
In addition to the indoor seating, there’s also an outdoor area with various seating options. This is the perfect spot to escape the busy streets and relax with your coffee. And if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, they also serve craft beer with happy hour pricing.
Yesterday’s cafe is a great place to hide away from the daily abracadabra and just enjoy some good coffee and company.
- Our Rating: 4.5 / 5

16. The Verde
The first thing I noticed when I walked in was how beautifully decorated the interior was – it felt like I was in a florist’s store rather than a cafe. The plants and flowers everywhere really added to the atmosphere.
The coffee here was great and well-priced for a hot latte. The meals were a bit more typical of Nimman prices, but still worth it. There was seating available inside and outside, and I opted for a spot outside in the plant-rich environment.
They had a great selection of food on the menu, including traditional Thai options like grilled chicken northern noodles and more western options like egg Benedict and homemade waffles with colourful fruits.
I had a fantastic time at the Verde. The beautifully decorated interior and plant-filled outdoor seating created a unique and enjoyable atmosphere. The coffee and meals were delicious and well-priced, and the friendly service was a nice touch.
- Our Rating: 4.5 / 5

17. Taste Cafe
I recently visited Taste cafe, and it was an absolute treat. The cafe is filled with plants, giving it a natural and serene atmosphere. The music is soft and relaxing, and the air conditioning is a welcome relief from the heat outside.
One thing I really appreciated about Taste cafe was the selection of English magazines available to browse through. It was a nice touch that added to the cosy and welcoming vibe of the cafe.
As someone who works remotely, I always appreciate a good Wi-Fi connection and was glad the Wi-Fi here was strong. However, electrical sockets were a bit scarce, so it might be a challenge if you need to plug in your laptop or phone.
Despite the limited seating and outlets, the cafe still has a student-oriented shop feel and is a great place to study or chat with someone.
As for the coffee, I ordered an iced caffe latte, which was truly excellent. This cafe ticks all the boxes for me and takes a well earned spot as one of the best cafes in Chiang Mai.
- Our Rating: 4.5 / 5
- Address: 2 Chiang Rai Rd, Tambon Su Thep, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Thailand
18. Transit Number 8
What can I tell you about this beautiful cafe? It’s certainly one of the best cafes in Chiang Mai if we’re talking about modern, clean, and Japanese-esque design. Multi-layered, this coffee shop epitomises class in every single way.
Step foot into this purpose-built Chiang Mai cafe space, and you’re greeted by friendly staff and handed a menu attached to a wooden slack – the running theme in this place.
Choose from a range of 5 coffee origin options, each with unique tasting notes. I opted for the Colombian Santa Maria with orange zest notes providing a fruit-focused drink. It was delicious.
We sat upstairs, inside the relaxing room with a Kumiko-style wall. Laid-back jazz plays out as you sink into your soft, wicker seat.
If you’re after a unique, modern cafe experience, you should definitely add this to your tick list.
- Our Rating: 4.7 / 5
- Address: 56, 19 Soi Sanam Bin Kao 8, Tambon Su Thep, เมือง, Chiang Mai 50200, Thailand
19. Palit Coffee
Next on the list is Palit Coffee, a small and cosy cafe located in the heart of Chiang Mai. As soon as you enter, you’re greeted by a wall of lush plants that make you feel like you’re stepping into a greenhouse.
The shop itself is small, with only a few tables and a counter for ordering. Well, they did have a few wooden chairs and tables on the side of the cafe.
Although they mainly sell coffee, they have a few cookies and small cakes available for a sweet treat. But let’s be real; the main attraction here is their coffee.
And trust me, it’s some of the best coffee I’ve had in Chiang Mai. The baristas are experienced and know how to brew a perfect cup. Plus, they offer a variety of coffee and non-coffee drinks, so there’s something for everyone.
One thing I really appreciate about this spot is its reasonable prices. It can be hard to find a good cup of coffee in Chiang Mai without breaking the bank, but Palit manages to provide high-quality coffee at a fair price.
- Our Rating: 4.5 / 5
- Address: 34 Patan ngam Road Tambon Pa Tan, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Thailand
20. Improvise coffee II
This is a fascinating little town. Located in a black container with a striking orange contrast, this coffee business serves its customers outside. Anyone with a car can simply drive straight in and park in the swanky lot provided.
It’s a great place to take a breather and unwind with a cup of coffee because of the friendly and laid-back vibe.
I also wanted to mention that the coffee was excellent. Most drinks cost about 50 baht, which is also cheap.
In addition to serving tasty beverages, they also offer their own label of roasted coffee beans for purchase. Those who appreciate coffee as much as I do will want to purchase some beans to enjoy at home. Chiang Mai locals and tourists alike should not miss this cafe.
- Address: 43 Ratvithi Rd, Tambon Si Phum, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Thailand
21. Life’s a Dream
This cafe was inadvertently recommended to me by a friend through Instagram, and when I saw the views, I just had to visit.
Thanks to great coffee, Life’s a Dream and this cafe has it all.
Stunning foreground views overlooking the park lake in the glorious sunshine. Smoothie bowls that’ll leave you wanting more.
An excellent standard of speciality coffee and an impressive food menu serving avocado toast, and salmon, you get the picture.
It’s a real blend of people and attracts those from all walks of life. Families, friends, remote workers, and those just there to relax, overlooking the view.
Sadly, it was an expensive coffee experience as I managed to catch a police fine en route (500 baht / £11.50) – make sure you’ve got your international driving license or be prepared to swallow the fine.
22. Asama Cafe & Roastery
I was pretty blown away by this cafe. Certainly in my top 5 of Chiang Mai’s best cafes to visit. But why?
The view and chill are like nothing else available in this dense coffee city. A moment away from the scooter noises and the hustle and bustle to enjoy a riverside coffee shop laced with tranquillity.
It’s worth mentioning that the neighbouring restaurant, which sits alongside the cafe (both family-owned), was truly remarkable.
How wrong we were since our favourite Massaman curry of our trip was to follow shortly. Tender chicken falling off the bone in a rich flavour-packed sauce paired with white rice. Simple yet so tasteful.
The restaurant owner’s Niece operates Asama Coffee & Roastery, but sadly she was out of town in Bangkok, so we didn’t get to meet her. Although, the attention to detail with the coffee menu and service spoke volumes without her.
I enjoyed a Rwandan filter coffee brewed over ice (Japanese style), which tasted light, florally, fruity and tea-like. Perfect for a hot day as the ice-cold glass refreshed my senses.
23. Artisan Cafe
Located just south of the central grid, in another one of Chiang Mai’s cool unknown streets, you’ll find Artisan Cafe. This place is just awesome on many levels.
The atmosphere is similar to that of a hip London cafe like Ozone.
This cafe has all the makings of a hit, what with its roomy tables, moody lighting, and gorgeous bar.
I can easily imagine this coffee shop being absolutely filled out should they move to a more central location or do more advertising, which is unfortunate for them but pleasant for us.
For this reason, I wanted to include them in this guide on the best cafes in Chiang Mai.
The cafe has a small outside area with a front bar overlooking the busy street. Pop your headphones in with a cup of coffee, and you’ll forget the traffic was even there.
Conclusion
Chiang Mai is home to a diverse array of cafes that cater to the needs of nomads and travellers. From artisan coffee spots to cosy hideaways, these 23 Chiang Mai cafes offer a wide range of coffee and food options and comfortable spaces to work and relax.
Whether you’re in for a refreshing cold brew, a warm and comforting latte, or a delicious pastry to go with your coffee, you’ll find what you’re looking for at these top cafes.
So if you’re a nomad or traveller looking for the best cafes in Chiang Mai, be sure to add these cafes to your must-visit list. You won’t be disappointed by the quality and variety of options available.
